Brief description of study

We will conduct a co-design session with approximately 6-12 patients to improve the design of patient experience surveys. We plan to recruit patients who are underrepresented in survey completion to contribute to development.

THIS STUDY IS ENROLLING BY INVITATION ONLY - Research coordinator/technician will review the ED tracking board to determine patients who meet eligible criteria for the study. Patients will be approached at the time of discharge from the ED and provided information about the study in their private room. We will review inclusion/exclusion criteria and they will have the option to consent to participation.

Detailed description of study

We will have an interaction at the end of an emergency department visit to provide information about the study and obtain informed consent.

  • For patients who consent, we will collect basic demographic information from the medical record (age, sex, race, ethnicity, preferred language, payer).
  • Patients will be consenting to be contacted after the ED visit for a future in-person co-design workshop. The primary study event, the co-design workshop, will occur approximately 1 week after consent in a conference room near the Methodist ED and patients will be escorted from the ED entrance by either the PI or a research coordinator.
  • There will be 2-3 reminders sent to the patient prior to the co-design group, according to the patient's communication preferences.
  • The primary study interaction will be at a co-design session with approximately 6-12 patients. We plan for this to take place in a conference room near the Methodist ED. Patients will attend the session for approximately 90 minutes and provide guidance on how to word questions and answer choices, as well as how the survey process should unfold to best allow their participation.

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions: all
  • Age: 18 years - 100 years
  • Gender: Male

Inclusion criteria:

  • Men who identify as Black or African American
  • Have Medicaid insurance
  • Recently discharged from the emergency department

The purpose of this study is to improve the design of patient experience surveys by including input from patients who are often underrepresented in survey completion. This study investigates ways to make survey questions and processes more accessible and understandable for these patients. We will work with patients who have recently been discharged from the emergency department to gather their insights.

Participants will be involved in a co-design workshop where they will help shape the wording of survey questions and the overall survey process. Before the workshop, basic demographic information will be collected from the participants' medical records. The main activity involves attending a 90-minute session where participants will share their thoughts on the survey design.

  • Who can participate: Men who identify as Black or African American, have Medicaid insurance, and have recently been discharged from the emergency department are eligible to participate.
  • Study details: Participants will be contacted after their emergency department visit for a future in-person co-design workshop. They will attend a 90-minute session to provide input on survey design. Participation is by invitation only.
