Brief description of study

Every conversation starts with the brain....Ever wonder how your brain helps you talk, tell a story, and find the right words to say?  Researchers at Indiana University Bloomington are studying  the connection between language and the brain.

We are looking for adults ages 45 and older who have had a stroke in the brain at least 6 months ago.

By comparing brain images with language skills, we hope to better understand how the brain supports talking, storytelling, and everyday communication — both as we get older and after a stroke.

Detailed description of study

What will I be asked to do?

You will complete some simple activities that help us learn about your language skills, such as:

  • Tell a story
  • Complete other speaking and language activities
  • Have an MRI brain scan (an MRI takes detailed pictures of your brain and does not use radiation)

Where do study visits take place?

  • You can complete everything during one visit to the IU Bloomington campus (the full visit takes about 3 hours).
  • Or, you may be able to split the study into parts: a language session by Zoom (about 1 hour) and an in-person MRI visit in Bloomington, IN (about 1½ hours).

Benefits/Compensation

You will receive:

  • $15 per hour for language testing
  • $50 after completing the MRI
  • If you travel from more than 25 miles away, you may also receive mileage reimbursement at 58¢ per mile.

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions: Healthy, Stroke
  • Age: 18 years - 85 years
  • Gender: All

Inclusion Criteria:

Adults who have had a stroke and:

  • The stroke occurred in the brain at least 6 months ago
  • Speak English well
  • Can safely have an MRI

The research team will ask a few other questions to make sure the study is a safe and good fit for you.
