Brief description of study

What is he purpose of this study?
The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the feasibility of collecting biologic material for DNA extraction and banking through the TBI Model Systems and IUSM.
 
THIS STUDY IS ENROLLING BY INVITATION ONLY - Participants will be recruited and enrolled during their inpatient stay at RHI or through a scheduled follow up visit for the TBI Model System study (IRB#1211010085). They may also be recruited during their participation on LETBI (IRB#19279) if they have not already been approached. If recruited during an inpatient stay, a consent form will be explained and signed and either a blood sample will be taken with routine blood collection or a saliva kit will be completed.

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions: Traumatic brain injury, TBI
  • Age: 18 years - 100 years
  • Gender: All

Inclusion criteria is the same for both groups of people that we will enroll, those consenting as an inpatient and those consenting during a follow up visit:

1.     Meets criteria for inclusion as an active participant in TBIMS National Database including:

a.     Moderate to severe TBI (PTA>24 hrs or LOC>30 minutes or GCS in ED<13 or intracranial neuroimaging abnormalities)

b.    Admitted to system’s hospital emergency department within 72 hours of injury

c.    18 years of age or older at the time of injury

d.    Received acute care and comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation within the model system hospitals

e.    Informed consent signed by patient, family or guardian

2.    Written consent obtained for participation in this study
