Laboratory Studies of Peripheral Blood and Bone Marrow Cells Isolated From Patients with Clonal Myeloid or Lymphoproliferative Disorders

Brief description of study
What is the purpose of this study?
The major purpose of this research project is to provide laboratory scientists with human tissue for laboratory experiments which may increase the understanding of the mechanisms of the disease and to develop better treatments.
Patients with recently diagnosed or relapsed acute myeloid leukemia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, chronic myeloid leukemia or other myeloproliferative disorder, chronic lymphocytic leukemia or variant, myelodysplastic syndrome or individuals undergoing bone marrow aspirates as part of staging for a non myeloid disorder or as part of routine pretransplant evaluation will be invited to participate.
Detailed description of study
What will happen during the study?
Patients will undergo either a venipuncture (drawing of blood – approximately 2 tablespoons) or a bone marrow aspiration and biopsy (a sample of bone marrow will be removed using a needle and a syringe) as part of the normal and necessary procedures done for all patients with that disease. It is to be emphasized that the venipuncture, bone marrow aspirates and biopsies are part of the standard evaluation of the qualifying diseases. It is understood that the samples needed for care of the patient’s disease will be obtained first and that samples for the research study will not require a separate procedure unless the patient specifically gives permission.
