Molecular and Pathological Correlates of Treatment Outcome in Patients with Thymoma and Thymic Carcinoma

Overview

What is this study about?
The major purpose of this research study is to obtain blood samples from child and adult patients diagnosed with thymoma and/or tissue samples from patients undergoing surgery for their thymoma.

We will use these specimens to test for certain characteristics that we think will be useful in defining high risk versus low risk tumors and to better define the origins of these tumors.  We will also be comparing our findings from these tests with clinical data obtained from patient medical records.

Volunteer specimens will be stored indefinitely at the Indiana University Tissue Bank.

THIS STUDY IS ENROLLING BY INVITATION ONLY -  Consistent with most oncology trials, patients are not actively “recruited,” but are screened by their physician for appropriate clinical trial(s) at the time of their routine clinic visit.  Occasionally, a patient may be a self-referral or physician referral, but are still screened for appropriate clinical trials at the time of their routine clinic visit.  PI and staff may send copies of relevant consent forms to these patients to look over prior to actually consenting or enrolling them. This may take place at the patient's visit at which the consent is presented or the patient's next visit to the outpatient hematology/oncology clinic.

Description

What is involved in study participation?
  • About 4 teaspoons of blood will be drawn and stored at the Indiana University Tissue Bank.
  • For patients undergoing a surgical biopsy or are undergoing surgery for your thymoma, a portion of the removed tissue that is not needed for pathological review will be kept and stored at the Indiana University Tissue Bank.
  • No extra tissue will be taken as part of this study; only the leftover samples not required for diagnosis or for the patient's routine care will be sent to the Indiana University Tissue Bank to be stored.
