Brief description of study

What is the purpose of this study?
The purpose of this study is to identify biomarkers (small molecules in the blood) that can predict those people at risk of developing Type 1 diabetes.
 
THIS STUDY IS ENROLLING BY INVITATION ONLY - Potential participants will be recruited in various ways for different aims by the research team and contacted or invited to participate.  At Indiana University, patients with newly diagnosed T1D will be approached whenever possible when inpatients at diagnosis and then recontacted after discharge. At IU, visits will be conducted at our Indiana Clinical Research Center (ICRC) and Riley Children's Hospital during inpatient new diagnosis stays, and coordinated with diabetes clinic follow-up visits when possible. Subjects will also be recruited through the CRC by identifying subjects already enrolled in a Type 1 diabetes study. Subjects at risk for T1D will also be recruited through the T1D at risk clinic.

Detailed description of study

What will happen during the study?

Aim 1: Collection and biobanking of blood and urine from subjects recently diagnosed with T1D for biomarker evaluation.
Aim 2: Biobanking samples from ongoing mixed-meal tolerance testing (MMTT) or oral glucose tolerance testing (OGTT).
Aim 3: Performance of MMTT in healthy, non-diabetic adults and pediatrics, and biobanking of resulting samples.
Aim 4: Collection and Biobanking of samples in healthy non-diabetic adults and children.
 

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions: Type 1 Diabetes, T1D, Healthy
  • Age: 1 years - 95 years
  • Gender: All

Inclusion Criteria:
  • Healthy adult or child without diabetes or new type 1 diabetic within 7 days of diagnosis by a physician.
Exclusion Criteria:
  • Pregnant
  • Current smoker
  • Psychiatric impairment or current use of anti-psychotic medication
  • Chronic illness known to affect glucose metabolism or taking medications known to affect glucose metabolism
