The Strategic National Arts Alumni Project (SNAAP) is an annual online survey, data management, and institutional improvement system designed to enhance the impact of arts-school education. Alumni of arts high schools, independent arts and design colleges, conservatories, and arts schools and departments within comprehensive colleges and universities, are surveyed. SNAAP provides the first national data on how professional artists develop (including obstacles as well as supports). It also explores the value of arts-school training on those who choose other careers and life paths. SNAAP findings allow educators to better connect arts-intensive training to artistic careers, make ongoing refinements to their educational programs and alumni services to better support their students, and inform local, regional, and national arts and cultural policy. The first national administration of the project occurred in 2011 preceded by three field tests conducted in 2008, 2009, and 2010.

SNAAP is housed at the Indiana University Center for Postsecondary Research (CPR), also the home of the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). Survey administration is conducted in cooperation with the Indiana University Center for Survey Research (CSR). SNAAP findings allow for national and other comparisons and can be disaggregated in various other ways so that institutions can better understand, for example, how students in different majors use their arts training in their careers and other aspects of their lives.
