Brief description of study

What is the purpose of this study?

The aim of this study is to collect a small sample of liver tissue and approximately 15mL of blood from patients who are undergoing elective liver biopsies for clinical purposes to establish and grow a liver tissue bank.  The samples will be used for future, unspecified research.  Additionally, clinical and laboratory data will be collected from the medical records and entered into a RedCap study database.

THIS STUDY IS ENROLLING BY INVITATION ONLY - To be included in this study, a patient must be scheduled for a liver biopsy. Potential subjects will be met face to face on the morning of their scheduled biopsy. They will be approached by a research nurse associated with the study or a study technician about study participation.

Detailed description of study

What will happen during the study?

Procedure:  Liver biopsy is a procedure that is routinely performed in clinical practice for diagnosis and management of acute and chronic liver disease.  Liver biopsies can be performed by gastroenterologists at bedside or by radiologists under imaging (CT or ultrasound).  The liver tissue, thus obtained, is processed and examined by the pathologist.  If a patient is agreeable and provides an informed consent, we would like to save an additional small sample for future research if the radiologist does not believe an additional sample would be detrimental to the patient.  This saved tissue will be labeled with an identifier and will be kept frozen at -80°.  On the day of liver biopsy, we would also like to obtain 15 mL of blood. This blood sample will labeled using an identifier and will be saved for future research.

It should be noted that:
(a) the liver biopsy is being done as part of the standard of care for patients
(b) the tissue and blood samples are collected to create a tissue bank for future research
(c) the information derived will be confidential
(d) publications resulting will not disclose any personal identity
(e) these samples will not be used for genetic studies and DNA is not being collected or stored
